Veterans Day

November 11 is Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day), a federal holiday in the United States that honors military veterans of the United States Armed Forces. The origins of this day trace back to 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, when a temporary cessation of hostilities was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I. Groundswell is shining a light on a number of charities that support Veterans and their families, including help with the transition to civilian life as well as nonprofits providing critical mental health and rehabilitation services.

Global Hunger

Global hunger is a critical issue affecting millions, with several countries in Africa, including Sudan, facing severe food shortages and famine-like conditions. Widespread conflict, economic instability, and climate-related disasters have hindered crop production and left millions of people without access to adequate nutrition. According to the World Food Programme, over 70 million people across the continent are experiencing acute food insecurity, with children and vulnerable populations at greatest risk of malnutrition and death. Nonprofits and international organizations are working tirelessly to provide emergency food aid, sustainable agriculture support, and economic resilience programs.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Prostate cancer remains the second most common cancer among men after skin cancer. With early detection and timely care, it has a high rate of successful treatment. Approximately 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2024 there will be about 299,010 new cases of prostate cancer and 35,250 deaths due to the disease. As part of efforts to increase awareness and raise funds to combat prostate and related cancers, Movember is a global movement that raises funds every year through what has become a well-known campaign where men are challenged to grow a mustache during the month.
