October Causes to Support in Groundswell

As October arrives and the weather begins to shift, we wanted to share with our Groundswell community a number of important causes taking center stage: Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Mental Health Awareness Week, International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, and World Animal Day.

Charitable organizations are doing incredible work on the frontlines to support the causes and communities that need it most. Through direct programming, research, advocacy and more, they’re making a real difference. They rely on the support of donors like you to sustain their important work!

Join us on Groundswell to learn about this month’s causes, support featured nonprofits, and find volunteer opportunities in your neighborhood.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed every October, is an annual international health campaign to raise awareness about breast cancer, the most common cancer in women worldwide, and the most common cancer diagnosed in American women. With one in eight women at risk of developing breast cancer in their lifetime, it's likely that many employees or their loved ones will be affected. There are many amazing nonprofit organizations that are working day in and day out to research breast cancer, highlight preventative measures, as well as support those undergoing treatment or on the road to recovery.

Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental Illness Awareness Week was established in 1990 to raise awareness about the mental illness crisis and provide resources for those impacted. Nearly 50 million American adults live with a mental illness condition, and many do not receive treatment or other support. Nonprofit organizations provide essential resources, therapies, and interventions, advocating for the rights and dignity of those affected by mental health conditions. From October 6-12, including World Mental Health Day on October 10, please consider supporting one of these charities that are working to advocate for and support those impacted by mental illness.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty - also known as World Poverty Day - is observed every October 17 to bring attention to the struggle of people living in poverty and make their concerns heard. Since its inception in 1987, people from different countries, backgrounds, and beliefs gather every year on this day to show their renewed commitment and solidarity with the poor. Poverty transcends geography, race and ethnicity - impacting people all over the world. There are numerous charities focused on alleviating and eradicating poverty through their programs, sustained in large part from donations large and small.

World Animal Day

October 4th commemorates World Animal Day, in dedication to animal rights and welfare. Rooted in a 1925 event in Berlin, and aligned with Saint Francis of Assisi's feast day, this occasion champions the invaluable roles animals play in our ecosystems and daily lives. Despite their significance, many face threats from habitat loss, pollution, and exploitation. Nonprofits focused on animals are at the forefront of tackling these challenges. They rescue, advocate, educate, and innovate, ensuring animals receive the respect and care they deserve. Supporting these organizations allows them to advance their work, ranging from rescuing animals to advocating for legislative and policy changes.
